Holocaust Commemoration at WTC

Especially, but not only, for Water Tower Students and Faculty -

HOLOCAUST DAY COMMEMORATION, YOM HASHOAH PROGRAM - MONDAY, APRIL 16 - 4 PM - LUMA

Hillel has been frequently requested to do more programming at Water Tower - and this is a very significant response to that request.

The stunning exhibit that opened yesterday - "A Blessing to One Another: Pope John Paul II and the Jewish People" - is the setting for our Yom HaShoah program.  There is a Holocaust section of the exhibit, and we will be meeting there for our program/ceremony.

The Loyola Museum of Art (LUMA) is usually closed on Mondays, but is being opened for our Holocaust Commemoration Program.  The doors will open at 3:30 PM, and the Museum will remain open for us until 5:30 PM, which will give you an outstanding opportunity to view the exhibit either before or after our program, which will last approximately 30 minutes.

Holocaust Commemoration Day, the 27th of the month of Nisan, is actually on Sunday, but we are doing our program on Monday.

Earlier in the day, from 11 AM-2 PM, at a table on the lower floor of 25 East Pearson, by the Cafe, Hillel will be have a special Memorial Table display with information about the Holocaust.  We hope those of you who are at Water Tower on Monday will stop by the table as well as join us for the Yom HaShoah program.

Sheffield Ave. Rm. 340 FREE Please RSVP to hillel@depaul.edu   John Macsai is a Hungarian survivor, who survived Nazi labor camps in Hungary (Kecskemet, Szekesfehervar), and Germany (Butsching, Mauthausen, Gunskirchen).   After liberation John came to the United States from Hungary on a Hillel scholarship to complete his architectural education. He practiced architecture in Chicago for 50 years and taught design at the School of Architecture, UIC, for twenty-six. He has been a field architect at an archeological site in Israel. He paints (Gallery 1756) and writes a monthly column on architecture and urban design in the Evanston Round Table.       What is the future of the Palestinians? Benny Morris, the son of Jewish immigrants from England was born in Kibbutz Ein HaHoresh. He received his doctorate from the University of Cambridge and for a number of years was the diplomatic correspondent of the Jerusalem Post. Morris is currently a professor of history at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Sheva.   Thursday April 19th 4-6p.m . We have two very special Hillel programs this week, right after Passover ends.


WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11 - "THE COMING OF LILITH: REFLECTIONS OF A JEWISH FEMINIST" - 3:30 PM - HUSSEY LOUNGE

In a lecture co-sponsored by the Women's Studies Program, the Gannon Center, Hillel and the Office of Student Diversity, DR. JUDITH PLASKOW, one of the foremost scholars of Jewish feminism, and a Professor at Manhattan College, will share reflections from her most recent book of essays "The Coming of Lilith."

This is the first time in recent memory that a Jewish feminist scholar has appeared at the university.

There will be a reception following the lecture.  Hussey Lounge is on the 10th floor of Damen Hall.



THURSDAY, APRIL 12 - LUMA EXHIBIT OPENING - "A BLESSING TO ONE ANOTHER - POPE JOHN PAUL II AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE" - 4-6 PM EXHIBIT TOUR - 6 PM RECEPTION/PROGRAM

This is a major installation exhibit being brought to the Loyola University Museum of Art.  The exhibit will run through the summer.

Happy Passover!

On behalf of Hillel at Loyola I would like to extend my wishes to you and your families for a Happy and Meaningful Passover.

Passover is our holiday of freedom celebrating the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery.  Without Passover and the Exodus from Egypt, there would be no Jewish people.  The Exodus of the Israelites from slavery to liberation is a paradigm for the importance of liberation and freedom for all people.  Passover is a time for Jews to be reminded of the inalienable rights we enjoy, and it inspires us to help secure freedom and liberty for all people everywhere.

At our Passover Seders we tell the story of the Exodus because it is the first ever in recorded history to celebrate the idea that slaves could become free people.  We tell the story because it has inspired us in our darkest moments to hope for freedom renewed.  We tell the story because it teaches us to have compassion for those who are still not free - because "we, too, once were slaves in Egypt."

As we sit at our Seders this year, we cannot forget Israel's kidnapped soldiers that will not be with their families this Passover.  Please go to the website freethesoldiers.org for a special prayer to say at the beginning of your Seder as well as for a petition to sign calling for their release.

Our ancestors traveled the world in search of safety and liberty, and we are here today because our ancestors never lost their hope.   We dream of a world in which Jews and all people everywhere are free.  We dream that next year Jerusalem may be at peace.  We dream that next year the world may be at peace.  "Shalom al Yisrael.  Shalom al ha-olam."  Peace be unto Israel.  Peace be unto the world.
