[This Shabbat!] Orthodox Shabbat on Campus

This Shabbat, December 9-10, Congregation Beth Sholom of Rogers Park, is
hosting a Modern Orthodox Shabbaton in the Shoreline Towers Party Room at
6301 Sheridan Road with Rabbi Ira Bedzow.

Below is the announcement about the "East Rogers Park Community Shabbat."
Beth Sholom was the beautiful synagogue at Pratt and Sheridan that is
currently unusable but is hopefully being rebuilt as a smaller synagogue
on the first floor of what will be a condo develpment on that land.  That
process is going to take several years.  In the meantime, the Board of the
synagogue hopes to host community programs to encourage community building
during the time of the synagogue reconstruction.

Beth Sholom has retained a young, Orthodox rabbi who is currently in
Chicago going to graduate school at the University of Chicago.  The
President of the Beth Sholom Board lives in the 6301 N. Sheridan
building, and the plan is to host shabbatons open to the entire Jewish
community of East Rogers Park about once a month.

Since Loyola is right in the neighborhood, the Board is very interested in
having Loyola students join their programs.  The Shabbat weekend includes
Friday night services and dinner and Shabbat morning services and lunch.
As the announcement makes clear, you do not need to go to both, and for
Loyola students and their friends, there is no charge.  Hillel is
subsidizing anyone who would like to experience this Shabbat.  If you
register for the Shabbaton, please explain that you are from Loyola, then
you will not be expected to pay the $10.

Since Hillel at Loyola does not offer regular Shabbat services of any
denomination, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience a Modern
Orthodox Shabbat.  If you do not live in the neighborhood and would like
accommodations, please indicate that when you register.

The weekend of December 9th and 10th Congregation Beth Sholom of Rogers

Thursday 12-08-2005 HILLEL CHANUKKAH PARTY THURSDAY!

Shalom,

Although Chanukkah is several weeks away - Hillel is starting to celebrate
early with all the traditional Chanukkah treats and surprises!


THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8 - HILLEL CHANUKKAH PARTY - 6-8 PM - AT HILLEL

Our annual, informal, great food, corny music Chanukkah party!  We know
Chanukkah does not begin until December 25th - but we are partying early,
at the end of the semester!  We will decorate Hillel like Chanukkah is
here!

The party is at Hillel, in the hallway, etc.  We will just spill over into
whatever space there is!  The S'more Machine will be there, too!

Every year we also have a gift exchange.  PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU CAN
COME TO THE PARTY WHETHER YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE GIFT EXCHANGE OR NOT!!!

The Gift Exchange works like this:  Sign up in Hillel to participate
in the gift exchange.  If you sign up by today, Monday, December
5, your name will be in the envelope beneath the sign-up sheet.  Come in,
pick a name out of the envelope, and buy that person a gift that costs
up to $5.  You bring the wrapped gift to the Chanukkah party, and we do
the gift exhange around 7 PM. The gift should be creative - not expensive!

If you sign up after Monday, write your name on a slip of paper from the
bag hanging near the sign-up sheet, put your name in the envelope under
the sign-up sheet, and pull out someone else's name.

Please remember, you should absolutely come to the party, even if you do
not do the gift exchange!

There will be traditional potato latkes, soufganiot (jelly-filled donuts)
and other surprises!

11-28-2005 [Hillel-at-Loyola] HILLEL THIS WEEK

Shalom,

We hope you had a good Thanksgiving break.  Hillel at Loyola is
co-sponsoring the showing of the film, "Crash," this Thursday and we have
our annual Chanukkah Party (this year a pre-Chanukkah party) next Thursday.
Wednesday is our final volunteer program, serving food at the Ark Cafe,
and we need volunteers for that.  These are our final Hillel programs for
the semester.  We have already begun planning for next year!

Please check the details about these programs below, and also check the
notices about the Hillel internship, cheap symphony tickets, etc.

We hope you will use these last weeks of school to stop by Hillel and say
Hi!



WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30 - SERVING AT THE ARK CAFE - MEET AT HILLEL AT 4 PM

The Ark, as its name implies, is a lifesaving organization for the needy
Jewish community of Rogers Park.  The Ark Cafe happens 6 times a month,
and we plate and serve the food to the guests who sit family style.
Serving at the Ark Cafe is a true mitzvah.

If you can help, please sign up in the Hillel or e-mail Patti Ray at
pray@luc.edu.

We need to be at The Ark at 4:30 PM.  You can meet at Hillel for a ride or
get there yourself.  The Ark is at 6450 N. California.  For those riding
from Hillel, you will get back to campus before 7 PM.



THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1 - 5:30 PM - CROWN CENTER AUDITORIUM - FILM "CRASH"

Hillel is one of the co-sponsoring organizations for a screening of the
cricially acclaimed flim, "Crash," followed by a panel discussion and
relfections on racism.  Alissa Melczer, Hillel Board Member, will be offer
one of the student reflections.

HILLEL EXHIBITS IN CUDAHY LIBRARY

Stop by the beautiful Hillel exhibits in the Library.

One exhibit about Israel is entitled "Hillel - Bringing Israel to Loyola."
That will be in the cases as you enter the Library.

In the case in the Silent Study Room, there is another exhibit about
Judaism and the holidays of the Jewish year entitled "Hillel - Bringing
Judaism to Loyola."

[Hillel-at-Loyola] BUSY HILLEL THIS WEEK!

The next two weeks are filled wtih special Hillel programs - really
one-of-a kind events.

Please check out each of this week's programs - Women in Medicine, our
Kristallnacht program (our Fall Holocaust program), and our opportunity to
volunteer at Uptown Cafe, Chicago's only kosher soup kitchen.

The following week there are 4 amazing entertainment happenings - 2
on-campus - 2 off-campus.   We are announcing them this week so you can save the dates, and we will repeat them next week.


"BEING A WOMAN, BEING A DOCTOR - AN OXYMORON?"

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER  8 - 4:00 PM - HUSSEY LOUNGE, DAMEN HALL-10TH FLOOR

Co-sponsored with AED, Pre-Health Honorary and The Gannon Center for Women
and Leadership.

A panel of women ranging from medical school students to mothers of
children from infants to young adults will discuss the joys and challenges
of combining being a woman and being a doctor.

The panel will be moderated by Fran Belmonte, PhD., Associate Professor in
the Institute for Pastoral Studies and the Department of Theology, who for
20 years taught a course in Medical Humanities at Loyola University
Medical Center.

A reception will follow the panel discussion.

        ANNE LANDAU, PhD

        "The Mysteries of Rothschild Hospital, Paris, 1941-1944"


Anne Landau, a faculty member in the Dept. of French and Italian at
Northwestern University, has researched the largely untold story of how
France's Nazi-controlled Vichy government turned the Jewish Rothschild
Hospital from a place of saving lives to a place of transporting Jews to
their death.  She will share some amazing stories of survival including
the secret pockets of resistance that occurred even within a hospital
whose mission had turned from sustaining life to becoming a road to death.

This program is being co-sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages
and Literature.



VOLUNTEER AT UPTOWN CAFE, CHICAGO'S ONLY KOSHER SOUP KITCHEN

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 - MEET AT HILLEL AT 5 PM - WILIL RETURN BY 8 PM

Located in the heart of Uptown at 909 W. Wilson, The Uptown Cafe is part
of Project Ezra, the Jewish community's initiative to help the extremely
needy and sometimes homeless Jews of the Uptown neighborhood.

What is special about the Cafe, is that the setting is like a corner
restaurant, and the volunteers don aprons and use order books, and
welcome and serve the diners as guests in the restaurant.  The only thing
the diners do not get is a bill!

YURI LANE, NATIONALLY KNOWN HUMAN BEATBOXER - "SOUNDTRACK CITY, CHICAGO"

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15 - CROWN CENTER AUDITORIUM - 7:30 PM

Straight from rave reviews at the Viaduct Theater in Chicago, Yuri Lane
returns to Loyola this year with his new show, "Soundtrack City, Chicago."
Last year, Yuri Lane's amazing one-person show, "From Tel-Aviv to
Ramallah" was one of Hillel's biggest campuswide programs.

This year, Yuri takes his audience on a hip-hop journey through the
neighborhoods of Chicago, its characters and sounds.

Yuri Lane generates a distinct soundtrack for each character through the
art of human beatbox.

This day in the life of the city is a wild ride!  The city is built of
sound and the journey is an acoustic advetnure.

After the performance, Yuri will have a discussion and answer questions
from the audience.  A reception will follow the discussion.



ANNUAL HILLEL/CLUB COFFEEHOUSE!  GREAT MUSIC, GREAT ENTERTAINMENT!!

The annual Hillel/CLUB (Campus Life Union Board) Coffeehouse has become a
Loyola tradition!

There will be Israeli food and, of course, coffee and tea - it's a

This is the Fall Citywide Hillel Cross-Campus Party!  North Beach is an
amazing club that you usually cannot enter if you are under 21.  Because
Hillel has reserved the party area - all students are welcome.

If Loyola students want to go together by el - you can meet in the CFSU
Lobby at 10 PM on Saturday night.  We will have a sign-up in Hillel for
students that want to go together.
