"Meet For Peace"

We wanted to inform our listserve about a wonderful initiative that has begun
at Loyola.

Every Friday between 3-4 PM on the corner of Sheridan and Kenmore, right in
front of Mundelein Center, students gather to stand together asking for peace
in our times.

This is not an anti-war demonstration, but a peace vigil.  The signs that are
there ask for peace/shalom.

We encourage anyone able to take even a few minutes to join these students on a
Friday afternoon before Shabbat to take advantage of this opportunity.

LOYOLAS MIDEAST DIALOGUE

Below is the information about our Mideast Dialogue.  Please be aware that we
are the only campus in the country that is currently organizing such a
Dialogue, and that says a great deal about the positive environment in which we
live at Loyola.  Hillel at Loyola won a national Hillel award in December for
its involvement in the Mideast Dialogue.  We think the Dialogue offers a rare
opportunity to Loyola students, and we hope you share this information with
your friends and professors.

"DIALOGUE ON THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI CONFLICT"

WE INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN A DIALOGUE ON THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI
CONFLICT THAT IS BEING COORDINATED BY HILLEL AND THE MUSLIM STUDENTS
ASSOCIATION.  THE DIALOGUE WAS HELD LAST SPRING, AND THERE WAS GREAT INTEREST
IN CONTINUING THE DIALOGUE THIS SPRING.

THE DIALOGUE WILL MEET ON FOUR MONDAYS IN THE STUDENT LOUNGE ON THE FIRST
FLOOR OF MUNDELEIN CENTER.  THERE WILL BE REFRESHMENTS AT EACH MEETING. THE
FIRST MEETING WILL BE MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6 WITH A MIDEASTERN DINNER AT 5 PM AND
THE DIALOGUE BEGINNING AT 5:30 PM.  THE NEXT TWO MEETINGS WILL BE MONDAYS
FEBURARY 27 AND MARCH 20 FROM 5:30-7:00 PM.  THE LAST MEETING WILL BEGIN WITH A
SPECIAL MIDEASTERN DINNER AT 4:30 PM.  ON MONDAY, MAY 1, DURING THE LAST WEEK
OF SCHOOL, THE DIALOGUE WILL SPONSOR AN INFORMAL DROP-IN OF MIDEASTERN STUDY
SNACKS IN THE HAYES ROOM, MUNDELEIN CENTER, 2ND FLOOR, FROM 4-7 PM.

OUR INTENTION IS THAT THIS WILL BE A DIALOGUE AND NOT A DEBATE.  THE ISSUES WE
HOPE TO DISCUSS ARE EMOTIONAL, PERSONAL AND CONTROVERSIAL.  OUR GOAL IS NOT
ABOUT CONVINCING OTHERS ABOUT A POSITION, BUT ABOUT PROVIDING A SAFE ATMOSPHERE
WHERE NO OPINION IS INCONSEQUENTIAL AND WHERE EVERYTHING MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

NO ONE PARTICIPATING IN THE DIALOGUE IS AN EXPERT.  AND OUR GOAL IS NOT
ABOUT MAKING OTHERS BELIEVE WHAT EACH OTHER SAYS IS TRUE, BUT ABOUT
LISTENING TO EACH OTHER AND BEING RESPECTFUL TO EACH OTHERS FEELINGS AND
OPINIONS.

A CORE VALUE OF THIS DIALOGUE IS THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ON ALL SIDES OF THE
REALITY OF THE EXISTENCE OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND THE RIGHT OF A
PALESTINIAN STATE TO EXIST.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU JOIN US.

SINCERELY,

ARWA HAMMAD, SUKAINA HUSSAIN, ALISSA MELCZER, SAMAR SARHAN
