because of the huge response in these first few days of registration.

Go to shorashim.org, register, receive within 24 hours the reply
acknowledging your registration and telling you the exact 5 steps you need
to do to complete your registration.  These steps include downloading from

the confirmation and waiver forms and passport front page and calling
Shorashim for a phone interview.  Loyola undergraduates will also have an
interview at Hillel after the first steps have been done through Shorashim.

The crucial step for holding a space is PAYING YOUR DEPOSIT.

HILLEL TREES, PIZZA & SHABBAT

Shalom,

This e-mail lets you know about the 3 special programs Hillel has this
week - 2 on Monday and 1 on Friday!

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13

Monday is Tu B'Shevat, the New Year of Trees!  This is the time when,
traditionally, you buy trees to plant in Israel.  Although it is cold in
Chicago, it is tree-planting season in Israel.  The New Year of Trees is
one of the 3 "new years" mentioned in the Torah.

Hillel annually has a "Tree Table" in the Student Union Lobby.  So, join
us at this year's Tree Table for Tu B'Shevat!

"BUY A TREE-GET A TREE HILLEL TU B'SHEVAT TREE TABLE"

10 AM-2 PM - CENTENNIAL FORUM LOBBY

*Traditional Tu B'Shevat foods/fruits and nuts.

*Forms to fill out (Hillel will mail them) to plant a tree in Israel.
Each tree costs $18, and you can have the certificate sent in honor or memory
of whomever you want.  When you buy a tree, you get a mini-tree from
Hillel.

*Laura Siegel from Hagshama will be at the table with information about
Israel travel/study/volunteer programs.

*There will be information about Israel's beautiful land, trees and
commitment to ecology.

Stop by and celebrate Tu B'Shevat in the CFSU Lobby between 10 AM-2 PM.

JEWISH NUMBERS AND PIZZA!

Our second program on Monday is at 4 PM in Hillel -  Rabbi Zev Drutman's
discussion about "Gematria" - the Jewish mystic's study of the world of
numerology.

At Rabbi Drutman's last class, students requested this topic - so

"GEMATRIA - JEWISH MAGIC WITH NUMBERS"

Come experience the mystical side of Judaism with Rabbi Zev Drutman.

At Hillel - 4 PM - Pizza Dinner will be served.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17 - 6:00 PM - STUDENT LOUNGE, MUNDELEIN CENTER-1ST FLOOR

SHABBAT SERVICE AND DELI SHABBAT DINNER

Last semester was the first time the Judaica Committee organized a Shabbat
Service.  Although this is no longer a "Hillel first" - it is a "Hillel
second."

Join us at 6 PM for a Shabbat Service in the Reform tradition followed by
a delicious kosher deli Shabbat dinner.

Everything is free!  But, please let us know you are coming by signing up
in Hillel or e-mailing Hadeigh Vining at hvining@luc.edu.

BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL REGISTRATION OPEN!

                             "BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL"

The trip is FREE, the experience priceless.
Hillel's Birthright Israel provides a free ten-day experience for
qualifying applicants.  Your adventure.  Your birthright.

Want to see the sun rise after scaling Masada? Watch the sun set
over the Mediterranean? Drop a note in the Western Wall?

If you are Jewish, 18-26 years old, and have never been on an organized
peer program before - let your journey begin this summer. Shorashim is the
organization conducting all the Chicago community Birthright trips this
summer.  With Shorashim you experience the awesome adventure of Israel through
the eyesand hearts of Israeli peers. Shorashim is the only Birthright
Israel program where all groups travel for 10-days with Israeli friends.
Leave the tour bus behind; experience Israel the Israeli way!

To register for the Shorashim Summer Birthright Trips go to the link
below.  The general e-mail address is www.shorashim.org.  There are trips
in May and June for undergraduates, Russian students who want to go on a
trip with other Russian Jewish students, and graduate and young
professionals.

Detail information follows:

The direct link is:

http://www.shorashim.org/birthrightisrael/register.htm.

The application itself should take you about 20 minutes. If you have any
questions about your eligibility, you should contact us before you fill
out the application.

Below you can find some answers to commonly asked questions.

When will I know if I am accepted?
Applications are reviewed almost every day, so within several days, you
should receive e-mail notification of your "pending" acceptance into
the program. Of course, if you have any questions before then, you can
feel free to contact us at this email or by phone at the number below.

What do you mean by "pending" acceptance?
Acceptance means that you are eligible for a spot based on
availability. You will be notified once we know how many spots are
available and can confirm your space. In order to be considered for a
space you must complete the following steps:
1. You need to submit the confirmation form along with your deposit
    and the waiver form.
2. We need to conduct an interview.

Where do I get these forms, and how do I pay the deposit?
The forms are available on our web site in the "Forms" section. In
addition to the confirmation and waiver forms, which need to be
submitted right away; you can also download the medical and emergency
contact forms, to be submitted after your space is confirmed. Please
do not send in any deposits or forms until you have registered.

Your deposit can be paid online by credit card at the same location
(click the "Buy Now" button). You can also mail a check or money order
along with the forms to the address on the forms.

When will I be interviewed?
Once you have registered please call us at 773-342-3868 at your
earliest convenience to conduct this brief interview. We cannot confirm
your acceptance until we have conducted an interview, so it might be a
good idea to take care of it quickly!  Loyola students will be interviewed
by Patti Ray.

I heard that there may not be enough spaces for everyone?
While we hope to accommodate everyone who wants to go, it is true that
the response to recent programs has been overwhelming. It is very
likely that there will be more applicants than spaces available.

We are really looking forward to these programs and promise you an
amazing adventure. If you have any questions at all, feel free to
e-mail or call Shorashim directly.

Speak with Darin Argentar, Program Coordinator, Shorashim
