If you have any initial questions, contact Patti Ray at Hillel or email

IF YOU WANT TO GO ON BIRTHRIGHT THIS WINTER, APPLY AND PAY YOUR DEPOSIT
IMMEDIATELY! THIS SECURES YOUR SPACE. IF, FOR ANY REASON, YOUR PLANS
CHANGE, YOU HAVE A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD IN WHICH YOUR DEPOSIT CAN BE
RETURNED. HOWEVER, YOUR SPACE IS ONLY SECURED WITH A PAID DEPOSIT.
Detail information follows:
The direct link is:
http://www.shorashim.org/birthrightisrael/register.htm.
The application itself should take you about 20 minutes. If you have any
questions about your eligibility, you should contact us before you fill out the
application.
Below you can find some answers to commonly asked questions.
When will I know if I am accepted?
Applications are reviewed almost every day, so within several days, you
should receive e-mail notification of your "pending" acceptance into
the program. Of course, if you have any questions before then, you can
feel free to contact us at this email or by phone at the number below.
What do you mean by "pending" acceptance?
Acceptance means that you are eligible for a spot based on
availability. You will be notified once we know how many spots are
available and can confirm your space. In order to be considered for a
space you must complete the following steps:
1. You need to submit the confirmation form along with your deposit
and the waiver form.
2. You need to be interviewed.
Where do I get these forms, and how do I pay the deposit?
The forms are available on our web site in the "Forms" section. In
addition to the confirmation and waiver forms, which need to be
submitted right away; you can also download the medical and emergency
contact forms, to be submitted after your space is confirmed. Please
do not send in any deposits or forms until you have registered.
Your deposit can be paid online by credit card at the same location
(click the "Buy Now" button). You can also mail a check or money order
along with the forms to the address on the forms.
When will I be interviewed?
If you are a Loyola University student, once you have registered, please
contact Patti Ray to be interviewed. Your acceptance cannot be confirmed
without an interview. Patti can be reached by email at pray@luc.edu or by
phone at Hillela at Loyola - 773-508-2193.
I heard that there may not be enough spaces for everyone?
While we hope to accommodate everyone who wants to go, it is true that
the response to recent programs has been overwhelming. It is very
likely that there will be more applicants than spaces available.
We are really looking forward to these programs and promise you an
amazing adventure. If you have any questions at all, feel free to
e-mail or call Shorashim directly.

SPECIAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! DO A GREAT MITZVAH!
HELP DELIVER ROSH HASHANAH FOOD BASKETS TO NEEDY JEWISH FAMILIES
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 - 9:00-11:30 AM
The annual Rosh HaShanah Food Delivery is conducted by Maot Chitim of
Greater Chicago. www.maotchitim.org. More than 5,000 packages need to be
delivered, more than 12,000 people are assisted by these gifts. Delivering
these food baskets is a great mitzvah.
There are three options for the Loyola community to help. Pick the one
that suits your best.
OPTION ONE:
If you can drive to the Warehouse Location in Niles, Illinois -
7500 N. Caldwell Ave. Exact directions on www.maotchitim.org. Click on
Volunteers and then on Location.
Drive to warehouse, tell them how many packages you want to deliver and in
what area. They have recipient families divided by location. You do
not have to return back to warehouse. The whole process from pick-up to
delivery will not take more than 2 hours. You can deliver in an area near
your home. You receive cards with the names and address of families.
They are home waiting for these deliveries. You are able to personally
wish them a Happy Rosh HaShanah.
There should be at least two people per car for delivery. Leave room in
your car for the food boxes.
OPTION TWO:
For those who live on campus, some volunteers will drive food baskets to
Hillel, and we will deliver them in the area around Loyola. If you want
to help deliver, sign up in Hillel or email Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu. If
you can drive to the Warehouse and bring packages to Loyola, also sign up
in Hillel or email Patti Ray.
We will meet in front of Mundelein at 10:30 AM.
OPTION THREE:
For Russian speaking students, help is needed across the street at the
Babushkin Dom. There are so many residents there who receive food
baskets, a truck comes to deliver; and volunteers are needed for that
process between 9-11:30 AM.
If you are interested in helping that morning at the Babushkin Dom, please
sign up in Hillel or email Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.
It will make your New Year better to participate in helping make the Rosh
HaShanah of others better.
Shalom,
The Hillel Board has prepared yet another week filled with very diverse
activities from an Israeli filmmaker to a dorm pizza party to our annual Beach
Party to "Whirlyball" on Saturday night.
We hope you will join us some time this week. The details follow!
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 - 4:00 PM - HUSSEY LOUNGE, DAMEN HALL-10TH FLOOR
"Filmmaking in Israel"
Israeli filmmaker, Yair Lev, will lead this discussion. He is visiting
Chicago from Israel as part of the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema
(www.chicagofestivalofisraelicinema.org) that is being held at the Webster
Place Theaters in Chicago and the Landmark Rennaisance Theater in Highland
Park from September 7-17.
Yair Lev is a flimmaker and teaches Filmmaking and Theory of Cinema in Israel
at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School and the Bezalel Academy of Art
and Design.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 - 9-10 PM - SIMPSON MULTIPURPOSE ROOM
"Dorm Pizza Party!"
A Hillel first! Since there are so many Jewish students and their friends
living in the dorms this year - we are hosting a pizza party with deep dish
kosher pizza from Slice of Life. This pizza has won awards even in the
non-kosher world! We hope you will join us!
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 - 4-7 PM - HARTIGAN BEACH - ALBION AND THE LAKE
"Hillel's Annual Beach Party!"
For more than 15 years Hillel has hosted this end of summer celebration with
sand volleyball, music, food, games, and some other surprises!
Hartigan Beach is now Loyola's only lakefront beach, on Albion Avenue, which is
just one street north of Loyola Ave. There is a small path/alley that runs
right behind the Wellness Center, which is a short-cut to the beach.
We think the weather will be great! But, if by chance it is not - the party
will move to Hillel, on the second floor of Mundelein Center. In that case, we
lose the beach volleyball!
We hope to see you on Thursday at the beach!
SATURDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 16 - 10 PM-MIDNIGHT - 1880 W. Fullerton
"WHIRLYBALL"
"Whirlyball" is the perfect fusion of bumper cars, lacrosse, basketball and
madness - really!
On a basketball court, there are two teams of 5 bumper cars each. The games
are 3 minutes long, so people have many opportunities to play. Instead of
basketball hoops, there are holes in the backboards; and instead of
basketballs, there are wiffle balls and lacrosse scoops.
You have to see it to believe it!
Hillel has its own party room on the side of the Whirlyball court, with sliding
glass window/walls, so you can see all the action on the court. If you are not
from Chicago, you have probably not experienced Whirlyball!
The cost is $10, paid when you arrive. Refreshments and beverages will be
provided by Hillel.
TRANSPORTATION/DIRECTIONS
If you are driving - "Whirlyball" is at 1880 W. Fullerton. Exit the Kennedy
Expressway at Fullerton East and go just 3 blocks east on Fullerton between
Elston and Clybourn on the north side of the street. Free Parking. Phone at
"Whirlyball" - 773-486-7777.
You can also get to "Whirlyball" by taking Lake Shore Drive to Fullerton and go
west on Fullerton for about 20 minutes.
IF YOU LIVE ON CAMPUS, HILLEL IS PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION TO WHIRLYBALL.
Either sign up in Hillel or email Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu to arrange a ride.
If you have a car and can drive from campus, please let us know by signing up
in Hillel or emailing Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.
This Saturday night is "Selichot," which falls on the Saturday night
before Rosh HaShanah and takes its name from the daily penitential prayers
said from Saturday night until Rosh HaShanah. If you are interested in
going to Selichot services after Whirlyball, please contact Patti Ray.
