IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM HILLEL

Following are three important announcements from Hillel regarding our annual Hillel Campaign to Support the Jewish United Fund, lunch with the Israeli scholar visiting for the Peace Conference and information about the Hillel First Seder.

HILLEL BEGINS ITS ANNUAL CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT THE JEWISH UNITED FUND

To friends of Hillel:

You know the free kosher food that is always available at Hillel, and the great activities we sponsor that are free?

Today, Hillel at Loyola begins its annual Campaign for the Jewish United Fund. The Campaign runs until next Friday, March 30, just before Passover. The Jewish United Fund allocates money to organizations which provide services to Jews and others in the Chicagoland area and to Jewish communities in need in Israel and throughout the world. And, in terms of our own Jewish community at Loyola, Hillel's primary funding comes through the Jewish United Fund.

People are in need. Can you help?

Please come into the Hillel office in the next 10 days and fill out a pledge card to make a contribution pledge. We are not collecting money. You can either leave your credit card information or you will receive a bill in the mail from the Jewish United Fund for whatever amount you pledge. Those who make a Campaign pledge will have a "designer Jewish star" made for them on our thank-you "Wall of Fame." You also have the option to email Patti Ray, Hillel Director, at pray@luc.edu with the amount you would like to pledge. If you come into Hillel, you can check out the beautiful decorations on the kitchen cabinets that explain some of the international and local agencies and organizations that are supported by the Jewish United Fund.

It is important now, as students, to begin to offer support to our Jewish communal organization, even with a small pledge. The number of students that make pledges is actually more important than the actual amount, because the act of pledging to help the Jewish community begins or continues a pattern that you will hopefully carry with you well after your college years. We conduct our JUF campagin so that every Jewish student can take advantage of this opportunity to help others.

Please make sure and stop by Hillel in the next 10 days to fill out a pledge card or email your pledge. We look forward to your support.

THURSDAY, MARCH 22 LUNCH WITH VISITING ISRAELI SCHOLAR, YAACOV IRAM - NOON AT HILLEL

Prof. Yaacov Iram was invited to come from Israel to participate on the Mideast panel for the university-wide conference "Peacemaking in an Age of Terror."

Professor Yaacov Iram is the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights, Democracy, Peace and International Understanding at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel. He also holds the Josef Burg Chair in Education for Human Values, Tolerance and Peace at the university.

He is on a very tight schedule these few days he is at Loyola, but he will be coming to Hillel tomorrow, THURSDAY, MARCH 22 for an informal pizza lunch at NOON in the HILLEL LIVING ROOM. This is an outstanding opportunity to ask a scholar committed to creating peace in the Mideast any questions about the current situation and the prospects for such a peace.

[Hillel-at-Loyola] Med School Workshop Correction

To the Hillel Listserve:

The date for the Med School Workshop was listed incorrectly in today's Hillel listserve message. The workshop is NOT today but THURSDAY, MARCH 22. We are sorry for any confusion. The corrected message is as follows:

THURSDAY, MARCH 22 - MEDICAL SCHOOL WORKSHOP - 6:30 PM - FINNEGAN AUDITORIUM

This event will be in the form of a presentation. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation. This is a perfect opportunity for freshmen, sophomores and juniors to learn more about the MCAT, AMCAS, committee process, medical school interviews and more!

Check out this weeks events!!!

Shalom,

There are three main subject areas for our programs this week - a "not for women only" program for Women's History Month to begin the week, the major university conference "Peacemaking in an Age of Terror," and our Saturday night "retro" party at "Pump It Up" in Glenview. The details for these programs are listed below. There is also a special program for those who are pre-med, and after the program listings - an announcement about a great volunteer opportunity to help with LOYOLA SUNDAY, which is next Sunday, March 25 between 1-3 PM. If you do, you get a free Hillel hoodie! Have a great week!

MONDAY, MARCH 19 - "ROSH CHODESH: A TIME TO CELEBRATE WOMEN" - 1:30 PM - MUNDELEIN CTR. LOUNGE-1ST FLOOR

This is Hillel's special program for Women's History Month and is NOT for women only! Rosh Chodesh is the beginning of each Jewish month and is traditionally a time set aside to honor women. Rosh Chodesh Nisan, the start of the Jewish month of Nisan, begins Monday evening. Nisan in the month in which Passover occurs.

MRS. MIRIAM JAFFE, gifted Jewish educator, will discuss the meaning of Rosh Chodesh and other related topics.

There will be a special lunch served of a variety of dairy and vegetarian wraps and homemade cheesecake. We want to thank the Office of Student Diversity and the Women's History Month Committee for their support for our program.

MONDAY, MARCH 19 - MEDICAL SCHOOL WORKSHOP - 6:30 PM - FINNEGAN AUDITORIUM

Organized by several AED Pre-Health Honor Society students, students who have gone through the medical school admissions process will discuss the steps as well as give their own tips. This event will be in the form of a presentation. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation. This is a perfect opportunity for freshmen, sophomores and juniors to learn more about the MCAT, AMCAS, committee process, medical school interviews and more!

TUESDAY, MARCH 20-THURSDAY, MARCH 22 - "PEACEMAKING IN AN AGE OF TERROR" - MUNDELEIN AUDITORIUM

This major university-wide conference, which begins Tuesday evening, has a vast array of topics and outstanding speakers scheduled. All sessions are in Mundelein Auditorium. There is a request to have everyone register who attends a session - be it student, faculty, staff or visitor. For a complete listing of all the programs as well as the on-line registration form, please go to luc.edu/ethics.

Hillel at Loyola was particularly involved in helping to secure a panelist for the WEDNESDAY MORNING - 9:30-11:45 AM panel discussion "UNDERSTANDING MIDEAST TENSIONS AND HOPES." There are three panelists for that session - Mohammed Abu-Nimer, American University; Abdul Rashied Omar, University of Notre Dame; and Yaacov iram, Bar Ilan University, Israel. The Conference was not intending to bring a scholar from Israel, but when Erwin Epstein, Professor of Education and Hillel Faculty Board Member, informed us about the unique credentials of his colleague - the decision was made to bring Prof. Iram to Chicago.

Although this has not been finalized, hopefully Prof. Iram will be able to come upstairs to the Hillel Living Room for an informal lunch with students after the panel discussion.

FROM THE UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS OFFICE FOR HELP ON LOYOLA SUNDAY, MARCH 25 FROM 1-3 PM. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU CAN GET A FREE $25 LOYOLA HILLEL HOODIE TO WEAR THAT DAY - NOT TO MENTION THE VOLUNTEER CREDIT FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!

The Undergraduate Admissions Office has a wonderful opportunity to offer to students on the Hillel listserve. On Sunday, March 25th, over 2500 prospective students and parents coming to visit Loyola for Loyola Sunday. This is our largest event which serves to help admitted students make their final college decision. We need your help in hosting our Student Circles.

These Student Circles run from 1-3 pm and consist of 2-3 Loyola students helping 10-15 prospective students. We talk about student life, do some sort of interactive activity, and provide students with the opportunity to ask questions without their parents around. Not only is this a good way to get your organization names out there, but it also creates a great opportunity for receiving some service hours. You would show up wearing your organization's t-shirts to advertise the existence of your organization on campus.

If you are interested in helping on Loyola Sunday, please contact Amanda Dipman at adipman@luc.edu with your name, email, year at Loyola and major/minor. Please let Amanda know that you learned of this through the Hillel listserve, and please come by Hillel for your hoodie!

So that everyone may be on the same page, volunteers need to attend a meeting on Friday, March 23rd from 4-5 pm in the Galvin Auditorium in the Sullivan Center before Loyola Sunday weekend. We will be distributing packets and we will also have free pizza! If it is not possible to attend the training session, please let Amanda Dipman know.
