Supporting Our Jewish Community

To Friends of Hillel:

You know the free kosher food that is always available at Hillel, and the
great activities we sponsor that are free?  Well...

Hillel at Loyola's annual Campaign for the Jewish United Fund begins
tomorrow, Thursday, April 27 and runs until the last day of school, May 5.
The Jewish United Fund allocates money to organizations which provide services
to Jews and others in the Chicagoland area, and to Jewish communities in
need in Israel and throughout the world.  And, in terms of our own Jewish
community at Loyola, Hillel's primary funding comes through the Jewish
United Fund.

People are in need.  Can you help?

Please come into the Hillel office in the next 10 days and fill out a
pledge card to make a contribution pledge.  We are not collecting money.
You will receive a bill in the mail from the Jewish United Fund for
whatever amount you pledge.  Everyone who makes a Campaign pledge will
have a "designer Jewish star" made for them on our thank-you "Wall of
Fame."

It is important now, as students, to begin to offer support, even with a
small pledge.  We are conducting our JUF Campaign so that every Jewish
student can take advantage of this opportunity to help others in the
Jewish community and elsewhere.

Please make sure and stop by Hillel in the next 10 days.  We look forward
to your support.

Brett Cohen, Kevin Gafni, Alana Kinarsky, Hadleigh Vining, Alyssa Zeller,
Lisette Zaid, JUF Campaign Committee Chair

Important Message to the Hillel Board

To Our Fellow Hillel Board Members,

On Thursday, April 27 Hillel at Loyola will begin its annual campaign for
the Jewish United Fund.  Our JUF Campaign will run until the last day of
school, May 5, 2006.

As you all should know, it is the JUF which provides the basic funding for
our Hillel and the many projects we organize every year, in addition to
the support the JUF gives to Jews worldwide.

We only do a fundraising drive like this once a year, and we think it is
important for the Hillel Board to set an example for the students we will
be contacting. Each of the five of us is making a pledge to donate at
least $50, and we are requesting that every Hillel at Loyola Board Member
pledge to donate at least $18 to the Jewish United Fund.  If anyone is
unable to pledge that amount, we are offering to make up the difference
between the five of us.

18 is the number that represents "chai," life.  If you could donate
"double chai" - $36 - that would be outstanding!  As most of you know,
asking each Board Member to pledge to donate at least $18 has become a
tradition in our Hillel.  Besides setting an example for other students,
our pledges demonstrate our commitment to the JUF for its generosity in
helping to support our Hillel.

Tomorrow we will be sending out an announcement about the Campaign to the
entire Hillel listserve.  The 5 of us will be taking shifts throughout the
Campaign week sitting in Hillel helping students with pledge cards and
making Jewish stars to put on our "Wall of Fame" for those who make a
pledge.  Remember, we are asking for pledges and not for actual
donations during our Campaign Week. Students will receive bills later from
the Jewish United Fund.

Please stop by in the next week to make your pledge of at least $18.  We
look forward to your support.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Brett Cohen, Kevin Gafni, Alana Kinarsky, Hadleigh Vining
Lisette Zaid, JUF Campaign Committee Chair

    Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Rememberance Day)
    at Roosevelt University

We will hear the story of Dr. Andrew Loew who still practices pediatrics in Flossmoor 2-3 days per week. He was born June 28, 1922 in Stanislawow, Poland (now, Ivano-Frankusk, Ukraine). The city was occupied by the Russians from September 1939 until 1941 when the Germans took over and established a ghetto from which Andy managed to escape in late 1942. He survived in Warsaw, living as a Christian and in the fall of 1944, he fought, as a captain, with the Polish Underground during the uprising which lasted about three months.
After the war, he attended medical school in Munich.

YOM HASHOAH - HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY - TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 2006

Tuesday is he 27th of Nisan on the Jewish calendar, the day set aside to
commemorate the 6 million Jewish victims of the Nazi Holocaust, which
includes 2 million Jewish children.  After World War II, the world Jewish
community tried to find a day on which to set this commemoration, and
selected the date on the Jewish calendar that marked the end of the battle
of the Warsaw Ghetto, one of the great examples of Jewish resistance
    during World War II.

Hillel will have a YOM HASHOAH COMMEMORATION TABLE in the CFSU LOBBY from
    10 AM - 2 PM on TUESDAY, APRIL 25.

We will have the traditional 6 yarhzeit candles, symbolizing the 6
Million, and there will be a display of literature and resources about the
Holocaust. We will also be showing videos about the Holocaust at the
    Commemoration Table.

We hope you can take a few minutes out of your day to stop by the table
and reflect on the victims of the Holocaust - the 6 Million Jews and the 6
    Million others who perished.
