HILLEL BOARD NOTICE

Please note that the final Board Meeting of the semester will be
the THURSDAY after break - THURSDAY, MARCH 16 at 4 PM.  It is at this
meeting that we will finalize the schedule for Hillel elections.

Following is an e-mail we received about the Ann Coulter speech from the
Loyola Anti-War Network about a meeting they want to have in the lobby
downstairs at 6:30 PM tomorrow night.  We have a program on the Israeli
elections at 5:30 PM.  If any of you can go to the 6:30 PM meeting, please
let me know.

MESSAGE FROM THE LOYOLA ANTI-WAR NETWORK ABOUT THE ANN COULTER SPEECH

I was wondering if there had been any discussion within Hillel about the
upcoming speaking date of Ann Coulter on Loyola's campus. Word has spread
pretty quickly this week about Coulter's unabashed use of racist and
sexist language, and many students have been vocalizing their opposition to her
speech (and especially the use of their money to pay for it). Because much of
what Ann Coulter stands for directly opposes the people and principles around which
Hillel is created, the Anti-War Network (LAWN) would like to ask any
students involved in Hillel to join us and students from other cultural, religious,
and progressive groups on campus TOMORROW, Thursday, at 6:30pm in the lobby of
Mundelein to discuss ways to show unified and organized opposition to the
speech. Because Coulter and the College Republicans have denied students
the opportunity to freely pose questions during the event, LAWN and other
groups have decided to come together and try to find alternative ways to make our
opposition to the presence of hate speech on campus known.

I apologize for the short notice of the meeting, but information about the
event was not provided by the organizers in a timely fashion. The Spring Break
schedule also means that this speech will take place shortly after we
return.
We are also planning to hold a second meeting sometime after break. If you
have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Peace,

Dugan Meyer
LAWN

New York/Jewish Learning Spring Break

SPRING BREAK/JEWISH LEARNING TRIP TO NEW YORK!

Rabbi Zev Kahn, who teaches the Maimonides Class at Loyola, has forwarded
to the Hillel listserve the following Spring Break option.

If you do not have Spring Break plans yet, there is still time to apply
for a great program of Jewish learning and fun in New York.

The trip includes part-time learning in the morning and adventurous trips
in the afternoon such as Skiing, Biking, Skating etc...

There are separate trips for men and women, so this is not a co-ed
program.

They only need a few students to make this program happen, so if you
are interested, contact Rabbi Kahn now at zevkahn@jeteam.com or at
773-817-4406.

The cost is only $49 plus airfare, and there are substanial subsidies for
the airfare!

You can check the Spring Break New York trip out at:

Ann Coulter to Visit Loyola Campus?!

To the Hillel listserve:

Many of the University Ministry organizations are forwarding the
following petition to their listserves.  Please read this carefully.

Hi. My name is David Xu and I am a senator of the
Loyola Unified Student Government. As you probably
know, Ann Coulter has been invited by the College
Republicans to speak here at LUC. A few senators and I
have concluded that Ann Coulter's attitudes towards
many sensitive issues are not in accordence with the
Jesuit, Catholic tradition and does not serve any
purpose except to promote hatred amongst the students.
Thus we have drafted an resolution to advise the
College Republicans to withdraw their invitation and
find another, more approporate speaker. This event is
funded by the Student Activity Fund, to which every
LUC student contributes. It is extremely inapproporate
to use the students' money to invite a speaker whose
attitude will insult more then half of the students
here at LUC. therefore I wish to call up on your
organization to support our resolution by signning a
petition online at:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/Loyola/petition.html

Your support would be highly appreciated. If you wish
to show further support for the resolution, please
come to the next USG meeting at Bremer Lunge in CFSU
on Tuesday 1/28/06 at 3:30pm.

Thank you

    Fwd: [Hillel-at-Loyola] Hillel/Israel Programs

    Shalom,

This week before Spring Break, Hillel has 3 very differently focused
    programs relating to Israel:

TODAY - MONDAY, FEBURARY 27 - 5:30 PM - MUNDELEIN CENTER, STUDENT LOUNGE

A reminder that the second session of the "Dialogue on the
Palestinian-Israeli Conflict" will meet.  This session will be devoted to
discussing topics relating to the Palestinian and Israeli perspectives of
Mideast Historical Points and the Religious Dimensions of the Conflict.
Students will be presenting these perspectives and then everyone will
break into small groups to discuss the presentations.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 - "MEET THE ISRAELIS" - 6 PM - HILLEL LIVING ROOM

Three young Israelis who have just finished their army service and are
spending the year in Chicago teaching in a Jewish high school will share a
very frank discussion of their persepctives of recent events affecting
Israel - the disengagement from Gaza, the Palestinian elections, the recent
Israeli on Israeli violence in the dismantling of the settlement of Amona,
and the upcoming Israeli elections.  These are not policians or official
representatives, by any means, and they would also like to answer any questions
about living in Israel, visiting Israel, being young in Israel.

An Israeli dinner will also be served.

THURSDAY, MARCH 2 - "THE ISRAELI ELECTIONS - WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES AND
    WHAT ARE THEIR POSITIONS?"

5:00 PM - Lasagna Dinner at Hillel

5:30 PM - Discussion in the Hayes Room

Ofer Gutin, American Director of Hagshama, the University Student
Division of the World Zionist Organization, is visiting Chicago and will
help us understand the players, the parties and the process of the
upcoming Israeli elecitons and why this is such a critical election in
    terms of Mideast peace.

Several Loyola Hillel students hears Ofer speak at the national Young
Zionist Leaders Conference and invited him to Loyola during his Chicago
    visit.

    Israel events: We got tons!

Tomorrow, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27 - MIDEAST DIALOGUE

Kevin and Alana are each presenting in the "Dialogue on the
Palestinian-Israeli Conflict."  The Dialogue begins at 5:30 PM and goes
until 7 PM.  It would be great to have Board members there both to
support their presentations and to be part of the conversation.  The
Dialogue takes place downstairs on the first floor in the Student Lounge.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28 - "MEET THE ISRAELIS"

This year's guys from Kollel Torah MiTzion who finished the army in the
summer and are teaching at the Ida Crown Jewish Academy are going to share
their honest feelings about Israel.  I heard them this weekend in
Champaign at the Kedma Shabbaton.  This is a program we are not
advertising outside of Hillel.  They are very honest about their feelings
about the Israeli government, whom they feel has betrayed Israelis with
their strong positions about the disengagement and the Palestinian
    elecions.

6:00 PM in HILLEL.  We will have a falafel dinner.

THURSDAY, MARCH 2 - "THE ISRAELI ELECTIONS - WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES AND
    WHAT ARE THEIR POSITIONS?"

An opportunity to understand the process, the parties and the players of
    the upcoming Israeli elections.

The speaker is Ofer Gutman.  He is the national Director of Hagshama.  He
is based in New York and is Anna Polishuck's boss.  Anna Rozman and Ilya
Zharov heard Ofer at the Young Zionist Leader's Conference in Miami, and
Anna made arrangements with Laura Siegl (Anna Polishuck's replacement in
Chicago) to have him visit Loyola.

5:00 PM - Dinner at Hillel

5:30 PM - Discussion in the Hayes Room

These are three very different Israel programs, all relating to this very
    ciritical time in Israel's history.

    See you this week.
