Hillel This Week

Shalom,

Now that our High Holiday programs are over, Hillel has planned a variety
of volunteer, Israel-related, cultural and social programs.  This week we
have two special Hillel activities:

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18 - SERVE FOOD TO THE JEWISH NEEDY AT THE ARK CAFE

Meet at Hillel at 4:00 PM, you will be back to campus by 7:00 PM.

Help us help others at The Ark, an amazing social service agency in West
Rogers Park serving Jews in need.

The Ark Cafe is like a family dinner.  Those who volunteer help plate the
food and serve it to the guests who come to eat.  Volunteering at The Ark
is a true mitzvah.

The Ark is located at 6450 N. California Ave., just north of the corner of
California and Devon.  You can get there on your own and meet us at 4:30
PM or you can get a ride from campus, meeting at Hillel at 4:00 PM.

If you can help tomorrow evening, either sign up on the Hillel bulletin
board or email Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.  Since this is short notice,
please try to join us, so we have enough students coming.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19 - "THE REAL ISRAEL" - 5 PM - HILLEL LIVING ROOM

3 Israeli college students, all having finished their army service and all
social activists in Israel, are visiting Loyola as part of a tour of
American college campuses.

They will lead a multi-media, interactive discussion on the ongoing effect
of the War in Lebanon on the people of Israel.

An Israeli dinner will also be served.

FOR WOMEN INTERESTED IN DISCUSSING ISSUES OF FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY

Loyola student, Mackenzie Shreve, has contacted Hillel to see if there are
any Jewish women who would be interested in joining her and other women of
various faiths for a discussion group.  She describes the goals as:

A small group for women of different faiths interested in sharing
friendship, fellowship, faith and maybe food, too...  The general
hope is simply to learn about faiths that are unfamiliar and different
from one's own in the hope to expand our personal community and be a small
example in a big world of how to appreciate each other's differences and
discover what we already have in common; I personally find that by
learning more about other's faiths I discover new insights in my own and
in turn learn more about my faith and myself.  We hope to see this happen,
too.

If you are interested in such an opportunity, please email Mackenzie
Shreve at mshreve@luc.edu.

Pre-Health Professions Committee for fall 2008

    ** High Priority **

    Greetings:

Are you thinking about applying to health professional school for admission in the fall of 2008?  If so, why don't you let the Pre-Health Professions Program help you?

Eligible Loyola students and alumni who submit a satisfactorily completed Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee Applicant Packet by the deadline of December 1, 2006 (late deadline: December 15, 2006) may apply to medical, dental, optometry, and podiatric schools for admission in the fall of 2008 through Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee.  Those not submitting a satisfactorily completed Applicant Packet, or who submit an Applicant Packet after the deadlines, may still apply to schools on their own ( i.e., without the use of the Loyola University Chicago's Pre-Health Advisory Committee and without the coordination of letters of evaluation through the Pre-Health Professions Program).

Committee Applicant Packets are available in the Office of Pre-Health Advising (Damen Hall 201).  For those of you who are no longer in the Chicago area, we can mail or email a Packet to you upon request.

The Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee process can be extremely valuable to an applicant's candidacy.  If you do decide to participate in this year's Committee process, we welcome you and encourage you to make the most of it.

For further information, please contact the Office of Pre-Health Advising (773) 508-3636.

    All the best,

    Pam, Tim, Sally and Jim
    Pre-Health Professions

    Fwd: Life Science Career Day

    Attention all Pre-Health Professional Students:

The 2006 "Discover Yourself in Science – Career Week" is a week-long event (Monday, October 16 through Thursday, October 19) that provides an excellent picture of the wide variety of career opportunities in life sciences, physical sciences, and technology fields.  It is also an excellent opportunity to gain further insight into specific careers available in science and technology, learn more about what it takes to be a success in any career, and show some pretty influential people that Loyola students rock and meet some influential people from schools you may be thinking of attending!

Of interest to Pre- Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Public Health, Chiropractic, Naturopathic, and Optometry students in particular is the Life Science Career Day on Thursday, October 19, 2006, 3:30 to 6 pm in Centennial Forum Student Union.

There will be several representatives from health professional schools here at Loyola for the Life Science Career Day.  Specifically, Midwestern University's Pharmacy Program, Physical Therapy Program, Physician Assistant Program, and Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences; Rush University's Program in Occupational Therapy and Hospital Administration; National University of Health Sciences programs in Chiropractic Medicine and Naturopathic Medicine; and the Illinois College of Optometry will be among those participating in the Life Science Career Day.  Other organizations such as Teach for America will also be participating.

The Life Science Career Day is invaluable to all students interested in Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Public Health, Chiropractic Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, and Optometry.  It will also be valuable for any pre-health professional student considering taking a year or more off between college and health professional school.

The attached flyer details the activities of each day of the 2006 "Discover Yourself in Science – Career Week."

    All the best,

    The Pre-Health Professions Program
