Fwd: [LakesideStudents] Forum on Civility and Tolerance

Subject: [LakesideStudents] Forum on Civility and Tolerance
To: Student -post <Stu-Post@luc.edu>

I am writing today to address the behavior exhibited Thursday evening in
the Mundelein Center Auditorium.  Miss Ann Coulter was invited to our
campus to speak.  While many disagree with her opinions, the University
supports the right of legitimate campus organizations to invite
speakers, even those who may be considered controversial.  As a Jesuit
and Catholic University, we are a community of knowledge and learning,
open to the free exchange of ideas.  Unfortunately, many in the audience
chose to behave in a manner that did not allow for that exchange of
ideas but were uncivil and rude.  The lack of civility and the level of
intolerance displayed are a matter of serious concern for the entire
University community.

In an effort to address this matter the University will hold a Forum on
Civility and Tolerance on Monday March 27th from 4-5 pm in the CFSU
lobby.  I invite you to come and share your thoughts on how we as a
community can move forward in creating a campus community that is
diverse, tolerant and open to the civil discourse of ideas and beliefs.

Richard P. Salmi, S.J.
Vice President for Student Affairs

Understanding the Ann Coulter Demonstration

Hillel at Loyola is one of the many groups who have joined together to speak
out about Ann Coulter's visit to our campus on Thursday.

It is clear she has the right to speak on our campus.  This is not about an
issue of free speech.  It is about the choice to spend $24,000 of student
activity fee funds to sponsor an individual who is best known for the hate
messages she delivers.

There will be a demonstration about the Ann Coulter visit at 5 PM, TOMORROW -
THURSDAY, MARCH 23 - HALAS FIELD.

    March 20 Mideast Dialogue

This week is Israel Culture Week - called "Mediterranean Magic - A Taste
    of Israel."

Watch for the announcements of the special events on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday. The first event of Israel Week is our third meeting of the
"Dialogue on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict." Please join us - whether
you have been to earlier meetings or not.

    MONDAY, MARCH 20 - 5:30 PM - STUDENT LOUNGE, MUNDELEIN CENTER-1ST FLOOR

    "DIALOGUE ON THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI CONFLICT"

The Dialogue is being coordinated by Hillel and the Muslim Students
Association. It is a dialogue and not a debate, and an outstanding
opportunity to learn about and discuss the issues involved in the
Mideast Conflict in an atmosphere where no opinion is inconsequential and where
everything makes a difference. In this Dialogue session students will present
the Palestinian and the Israeli perspectives about two issues - "The
Palestinian and Israeli Elections" and "Portrayal in the Media." There will be
a refreshment break between the presentations and the discussion groups. The
final Dialogue meeting/dinner will be Monday, April 3 at 4:30 PM (please note
the earlier time). There will be guest speaker from "Hands of Peace" as well
    as a concluding Mideastern dinner.
