    Singer/composer Raichel and his band have been wowing audiences across the globe with their fusion of ballads, electronics, and Israeli Ethiopian chants. The Project samples Ethiopian folk musicians against modern grooves and drum loops to create an unforgettable ambient journey infusing old & new, rural & urban, traditional & modern.

    announcement about this semester's Maimonides program and 2 job
    postings.



    "NEW YEAR" SHABBAT DINNER THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 19 - 6 PM
    CARDINAL'S SUITE, FIRST FLOOR-MUNDELEIN CENTER

    It's not the Jewish New Year or the secular New Year - but it is the "new
    year" of school.  The Shabbat dinner will be very traditional - matzo ball
    soup, honey chicken, kugel, challah ...  After dinner, some students will
    be walking to 8 PM services at Emanuel Congregation, 5959 Sheridan Road.

    There is no charge, but we would like to know how many people will be
    joining us.  So, if you can come - email Patti Ray - pray@luc.edu or sign

    This unique Fellowship program was established to enable Jewish
    university students, despite a full load of classes, to use their free
    time to experience, explore, and learn about their Jewish heritage,
    helping to shape confident and knowledgeable Jewish leaders of the
    future.

    GEARED TO STUDENTS WITH LITTLE OR NO ADULT FORMAL JEWISH EDUCATION.
    LIMIT 30 PARTICIPANTS.

    STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE $400 STIPEND FOR THEIR INVESTMENT OF TIME IN
    THIS INTENSIVE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.

    The  program will include classes, trips, and meetings with many
    Jewish leaders and educators.

    The time commitment is two and a half hours of classes every Monday
    evening, two Shabbatons and a Sunday trip which includes graduation
    upon completion of the course.  In addition, students are asked to
    submit a one page journal (online) following each class or trip,
    covering their reflections and feedback on the program.

    The Maimonides Fellowship provides you with a special opportunity to
    realize and reinforce those human qualities that will enrich your
    life and those around you.




    WORK-STUDY JOB OPPORTUNITY AT THE IDA CROWN JEWISH ACADEMY

    You need to be work-study eligible to apply for this position.  Mr. David
    Newman, Chairperson of the Science Department of the Ida Crown Jewish
    Academy, needs a student who can work Monday-Thursday afternoons 8-10
    hours/week.  4-6 PM is when the labs for the advanced science students
    take place.  Earlier in the afternoon is also needed to help tutor
    students struggling with the sciences.

    SLICE OF LIFE KOSHER RESTAURANT IN SKOKIE NEEDS STAFF

    One of the areas busiest kosher restaurants has contacted Hillel, because
    the restaurant needs wait staff and host/hostess staff.  Because it is a
    kosher restaurant, you will never have to work Friday nights and Saturday!

    "THE THREE MUSKETEERS" at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre on Navy Pier -
    A New Musical Production


    WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7 - 7:30 PM - $15 - SPECIAL HILLEL SUBSIDIZED PRICE


    Once again, due to the genorosity of the Brookstone Family Grant, this
    semester's Hillel cultural event is offering $15 tickets, instead of the
    regular price of $40, for this new production.

    Although at the Shakespeare Theatre, THE THREE MUSKETEERS was written by
    Parisian Alexandre Dumas.  His musketeers have entertained readers
    worldwide for more than a century.

    Directed by David Bell for the Navy Pier Shakespeare Theatre, this classic
    tale comes alive in a spectacular new stage musical filled with grand
    adventure and ill-fated romance.

    There are only 13 tickets available.  If you would like one, they will be
    distributed on a first come-first serve basis.  Email Patti Ray at

    International Jewish Theater Conference in Vienna

    The International Theatre Conference is sponsored by the Association for Jewish Theatre, a North American organization under the auspices of the Jewish Community Center Association of North America with international collaborations. They provide networking, mentoring, and support for Jewish Theatres and performing artists.

    The conference is a professionally run event (see letter below by President Kayla Gordon) and is always exciting, informational, professionally fulfilling, and a tremendous way for Jews in the performing arts to get together. See the

    Dates March 20 � 23 with a possible Shabbat Weekend stay returning March 24th
    Costs The Conference fee is $150; the hotels range from 90 Euro to 110 for singles and 140 Euro for doubles; the airfare looks to be approximately $750 � $850 We are also working to find subsidies based on need.

    The Hatikvah Project: Art Show
    A student multi-media themed art show for juried prizes

    Hatikvah is the national anthem of Israel. It also means The Hope. Out of these two concepts MOSAIC: Jewish Arts in the Loop, the Hillels Around Chicago�s student arts consortium, is sponsoring a multi-media arts show for juried prizes. All arts can be represented using this theme in any way the artist desires: fine arts, graphic arts and design, mixed media, film, theatre and performance, music, etc.

    Important Meeting
    An informational meeting for The Hatikvah Project will be on February 1 at Spertus Institute at 6:30 pm. A free light dinner will be included. At this meeting students will be informed about: Use of the theme, Criteria for judging, Dates for submission, Prizes for the awards

    A Gift From Israel

    Hi,

    On behalf of Hillel at Loyola, we hope you had a great winter break.

    Tomorrow we will send a listserve message with some of the spectacular
    programs that Hillel has planned for the beginning of the semester.
    This includes the Tuesday, January 30, 8 PM concert at The House of
    Blues by the acclaimed Israeli-Ethiopian fusion band The Idan Raichel
    Project.  There are highly subsidized $15 tickets (regular price $35)
    for Hillel students.  Details on ticket purchase will come in tomorrow's
    email.

    For today, we want to forward to you this "gift" we were sent by the
    Israeli Consulate for those who have just returned from their Birthright
    Israel trips, are thinking about the ones they have already taken or are
    looking forward to visiting Israel in the future.
