Parshas HaShavua Mishpatim

Parshas Mishpatim

Jewish Law

"And these are the laws which you shall wset before them"
(Exodus 21:1)

The rabbis comment on the "and" (the conjunction "vav") with which this
sedra begins with. Rashi says that the force of the conjunction is to
emphasize that although the section on civil law in this sedra is separated
from the Ten Commandments in the previous sedra by an intervening passage,
both were promulgated on Sinai. Sforno remarks that the Ten Commandments
concluded with the words "nor anything that is your neighbor's", and the
purpose of the civil laws is that man should know his duties towards his
neighbor.

Ramban also draws a parallel between the civil law and the Tem Commandments.
The civil legislation of the Torah, in beginning here with the law of the
Hebrew slave, echoes the first of the Ten Commandments, which mentions the
release from bondage; and the reference to the seventh year in which the
Hebrew slave is to go free is paralleled by the fourth of the Ten
Commandments with its reference to the Sabbath.

Modern man usually differentiates between the Ten Commandments, which are of
Divine origin, and between civil law, which is of human origin. He does not
regard the prosaic and the pedantic laws, which govern everyday life and
behavior as being G-d given. Since the civil laws of modern states are
man-made they may be changed without any qualms to deal with different
circumstances as they arise. In Judaism, however, even civil law is of
Divine origin and its principles always stand. If, as sometimes occurred,
the law needed to be adapted to meet changed circumstances the sages always
acted in such a way as to safeguard the Torah law.

The concept of establishing courts of law to administer justice is in
Judaism a religious obligation. Judaism laid down seven laws the seven
commandments of the sons of Noah , which are applicable to all mankind, one
of which is the command to establish courts of justice. As for the Jewish
people, the principles of establishing justice in Israel anteceded the Ten
Commandments, having been given earlier at Marah after the crossing of the
Red Sea before Israel reached Sinai. The Torah tells how Moses, after
descending from Mount Sinai, sat alone, administering justice from morning
to evening (Exodus 18:13). With G-d's approval, he appointed judges to try
civil disputes, while more serious cases and matters of doubt were still
submitted to him for decision. A large part of Jewish civil law as set forth
in the Talmud and in the Codes is based upon the civil legislation found in
this sedra.

Underlying Jewish civil law is the ethical and moral code demanded by the
Torah. In Leviticus chapter 19, those ethical laws for which man is not
answerable to a human court, depending as they do upon the heart, are
followed by the words, "and you shall fear your G-d". Commands like those
not to curse the deaf, not to put a stumbling block before the blind, not to
steal nor to tell lies, are sometimes called natural or rational laws
because, it is thought, any reasonable person would obey then even if they
were not commanded by the Torah. Are there not atheists and rationalists who
lead their lives according to high ethical principles? The truth, however,
is that where there is no fear of G-d there is no basis for ethical conduct.
Immoral laws, such as those promulgated by the Nazis, will not be obeyed by
those who are guided by the higher moral and ethical laws of G-d.

Judaism teaches that just as the Ten Commandments were given on Sinai, so
too were all the laws of the Torah.

    BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL REGISTRATION OPENS TOMORROW!!!

                                  "BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL"

The trip is FREE, the experience priceless.
Hillel's Taglit Birthright Israel provides a free ten-day experience for
qualifying applicants.  Your adventure.  Your birthright.

Want to see the sun rise after scaling Masada? Watch the sun set
over the Mediterranean? Drop a note in the Western Wall?

If you are Jewish, 18-26 years old, and have never been on an organized
peer program before - let your journey begin now! Shorashim is the
organization conducting all the Chicago community Birthright trips. With
Shorashim you experience the awesome adventure of Israel through
the eyes and hearts of Israeli peers. Shorashim is the only Birthright Israel
program where all groups travel for 10-days with Israelis.
Leave the tour bus behind; experience Israel the Israeli way!

To register for the Shorashim Birthright Trip go to the link below. The general
e-mail address is www.shorashim.org.  Because of a new special grant this
year, there are now going to be Taglit Birthright trips in May, June, July
AND August  for undergraduates, Russian students who want to go on a trip with
other Russian Jewish students, and graduate and young professionals.

If you are going to summer school, you can take the May trip that leaves
around May 10 or possibly an August trip, if you are not doing two
sessions of summer school.  The Russian Reunion Trip is going from about
    June 20-July 2.

YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACT IS TO MAKE SURE AND PAY YOUR DEPOSIT WHEN YOU
REGISTER! IF YOU WANT TO GO ON BIRTHRIGHT, APPLY AND PAY YOUR DEPOSIT
IMMEDIATELY!  THIS SECURES YOUR SPACE.  IF, FOR ANY REASON, YOUR PLANS CHANGE,
YOU HAVE A CERTAIN TIME PERIOD IN WHICH YOUR DEPOSIT CAN BE RETURNED.  HOWEVER,
YOUR SPACE IS ONLY SECURED WITH A PAID DEPOSIT.

    Detail information follows:

    The direct link is:

    http://www.shorashim.org/birthrightisrael/register.htm.

The application itself should take you about 20 minutes. If you have any
questions about your eligibility, you should contact us before you fill out the
    application.

Below you can find some answers to commonly asked questions.

When will I know if I am accepted?
Applications are reviewed almost every day, so within several days, you
should receive e-mail notification of your "pending" acceptance into
the program. Of course, if you have any questions before then, you can
feel free to contact us at this email or by phone at the number below.

What do you mean by "pending" acceptance?
Acceptance means that you are eligible for a spot based on
availability. You will be notified once we know how many spots are
available and can confirm your space. In order to be considered for a
space you must complete the following steps:
      1. You need to submit the confirmation form along with your deposit
         and the waiver form.
      2. You need to be interviewed.

Where do I get these forms, and how do I pay the deposit?
The forms are available on our web site in the "Forms" section. In
addition to the confirmation and waiver forms, which need to be
submitted right away; you can also download the medical and emergency
contact forms, to be submitted after your space is confirmed. Please
do not send in any deposits or forms until you have registered.

Your deposit can be paid online by credit card at the same location
(click the "Buy Now" button). You can also mail a check or money order
along with the forms to the address on the forms, but it is far more
    efficient to do it online.

    When will I be interviewed?
If you are going on a Loyola trip, once you have registered, please
contact Patti Ray to be interviewed.  Your acceptance cannot be confirmed
without an interview.  Patti can be reached by email at pray@luc.edu or by
phone at Hillela at Loyola - 773-508-2193.

I heard that there may not be enough spaces for everyone?
While we hope to accommodate everyone who wants to go, it is true that
the response to recent programs has been overwhelming. It is very
likely that there will be more applicants than spaces available, WHICH IS
WHY SECURING YOUR SPACE WITH A DEPOSIT IS SO IMPORTANT.

We are really looking forward to these programs and promise you an
amazing adventure. If you have any questions at all, feel free to
    e-mail or call Shorashim directly.

    AMAZING HILLEL WEEK!

    Shalom,

Monday-Thursday there is an outstanding Hillel program - and each is
very different from the other.  The diversity of Hillel is absolutely
demonstrated this week.  Two of the highlights are the very first
"women's only" Valentine's Day "Tea Party" sponosred by the women of MSA
and Hillel, and the Thursday, February 15 campus-wide panel and gala
banquet about faith and culture at Loyola.  We hope you take advantage of
this week's great programs and the great food that goes with them.

    MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12 - 5:30 PM - HILLEL-MUNDELEIN CENTER, 2ND FLOOR

"THE ETHICS OF THE ISRAELI ARMY"

Led by members of Kollel Torah MiTzion - our guests are college students
who have just finished their service in the IDF (Israel Defense Forces)
and are a spending a year volunteering in an area Jewish high school before
    beginning their college education.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a frank discussion of what it means
to be in the Israeli army, the place army service holds in the life of an
Israeli, the ethical standards by which those who serve are held to and
their own personal experiences with the realities of the ethical
    standards.

Dinner will be served at 5:30 PM, and the discussion will follow.

    TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13 - 7:00 PM - HILLEL-MUNDELEIN CENTER, 2ND FLOOR

    "THE A,B,C'S OF JUDAISM"

Patti Ray, Hillel Director, is making this presentation for the Turkish
Intercultural Club's "Interfaith Week."  It is a Turkish Intercultural
Club program being held at Hillel, and the Turkish Intercultural Club
would very much like those on the Hillel listerve to attend.

    WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14 - 4-6 PM - CARDINAL'S STE., MUNDELIEN CTR.-1ST FL.

    "TEA, TABOO, AND FONDUE"

The women of the Muslim Students' Association (MSA) and Hillel invite you
to a tea party with chocolate fondue and the game of Taboo!

There will be great dipping treats for the fondue - from fruits to
marshmellows to graham crackers to pretzels.  There will be teas from
around the world, and a very exciting game of Taboo!

This program is a "first" for Hillel and MSA, and we are very excited
about it.  The party is for women only, please - but not only for Muslim
and Jewish women - so please invite your women friends to join us!

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14 - 4-5 PM - MCCORMICK LOUNGE, COFFEY HALL

    "HILLEL LATIN DANCE CLASS"

As you can see, we have two programs on Wednesday that overlap a bit.

Konstantin and Jane's dance class is continuing on Wednesday's from 4-5.
There is so much enthusiasm for the class, they are now meeting weekly.
The women in the class can come to the "tea party" for the last hour!

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15 - 5-7 PM - SIMPSON MULTIPURPOSE ROOM

"FROM JERUSALEM, TO MECCA, TO CALCUTTA, TO CHICAGO" -
A discussion on faith and culture at Loyola University Chicago

This very special program is sponsored by the Niagara Foundation, Exelon
and Loyola University Chicago in honor of Black History Month.  The
program has two parts - a panel discussion and an amazing array of foods
from the different faith traditions and cultures represented on the panel.

A student from Hillel, MSA, HSO, University Ministry, Black Men's
Initiative, and an African-American Jesuit priest will comprise the panel,
which will discuss the rich faith traditions and diverse cultrues as they
are lived out and celebrated here at our campus.

The evening will begin with a dinner with foods from the Turkish
Intercultural Club, halal food from the Muslim Students' Association,
kosher food from Hillel, and vegetarian food from the Hindu Students'
    Organization.

Father Garanzini, President of Loyola University Chicago, initiated this
program with the Niagra Foundation to celebrate the way our different
faith and cultural organizations interact at Loyola.  We hope you will
    join us on Thursday evening.

    HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
