[Hillel-at-Loyola] Area Synagogue Vandalized

We apologize that we did not receive notice of this demonstration against
racism and anti-Semitism at Agudas Achim Synagogue in enough time to let
our listserve know.

But, even after the fact, there are several important points you should
know.  The Muslim Students Association of Loyola sent a representation to
the deomonstration holding signs that read "Muslims Oppose Anti-Semitism."
Alana Kinarsky, one of the Hillel Board members who was there, said the
entire program was one of the moving moving experiences she has ever had.
There were speakers from all the faith traditions decrying the vandalism.
There were Russian Jewish immigrants who wore their army uniforms used
when they fought the Nazis in World War II as a statement that they were
notw fighting a new generation of such people.  Finally, as a symbolic
gesture of eradicating anti-semitism, those attending each took a
paintbrush in hand and painted over some of the racist graffiti.

PROTEST AGAINST DESECRATION AT AREA SYNAGOGUE

An area synagogue Congregation Agudas Achim,
had an anti-Semitic incident the other evening. Windows were broken,
swastikas were painted on the building, along with other anti-Semitic
epithets.

This Sunday, February 19, 2006, there will be a gathering outside the
shul for a number of purposes: 1) Showing support for the shul and
its community; 2)A public display that we will not tolerate such
action; 3) Cleanup of the site; and 4) To hear from some community
leaders in response to this appalling incident.

This gathering will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Congregation Agudas
Achim, 5029 N. Kenmore in Chicago.
