[Hillel-at-Loyola] Shalom from Hillel

Shalom,

 
With this first Hillel listserve message of the new school year, we would like to welcome the new students to Loyola, and we would like to welcome back our returning students -  and especially those students who visited Israel this summer on Taglit-Birthright Israel programs and others.  You should know that the 21 Loyola students who went on Birthright this summer comprised one of the highest percentages of students going to Israel of any school in the United States!

NEW HEBREW CLASS, NEW HEBREW TEACHER, NEW HEBREW TEXTBOOK!!
 
We are very pleased to announce that Loyola's Department of Modern Languages and Literature is offering Hebrew 101 - Modern Hebrew I - on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:45 PM in Mundelein 303.  The teacher is Ayala Schlezinger, and she is very excited about the new class.
 
This is a great opportunity to learn Hebrew for credit!  Remember, you can add a class until the end of the week of school.
 
 
 
HILLEL HIGHLIGHT THIS WEEK - "PARTY AT THE PIER!" - WEDNESDAY,  AUGUST 29
 
Hillel at Loyola is located on the second floor of Mundelein Center.  Every day this week there will be great food at Hillel.  Please stop by and introduce yourself, if you are new, or if you are a returning student - let us know how your summer went!
 
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29 is at"two-event" day for HIllel
 
1-4 PM on Halas Field look for Hillel's table at the Organization Fair.  This is where you get Hillel's cool giveaway for this year!  If the weather is bad, the Organization Fair will be on the second floor of Halas.
 
"PARTY AT THE PIER!" - Dinner, Boat Ride, Fireworks Show and more...
5:30 PM - Meet at Hillel for carpools to Navy Pier
6-8:00 PM - We are bringing the sub sandwiches for dinner, and then plenty of time to explore the Pier.
8:00-8:30 PM - Skyline Boat Tour of Chicago - FREE for new students (Hillel's gift), only $10 for others.
9:00-10:00 PM - Go to the end of Navy Pier to watch the Fireworks Show, and then return to Loyola. 
 
"PARTY AT THE PIER" is Hillel's special first-week event.  We hope you will join us!

Wednesday, September 5 - 5 PM - Hillel - "Back from  Birthright - Now What?" Israeli Dinner
 
With great Israeli food, an opportunity for students who were in Israel on Birthright or other programs to meet each other as well as students interested in going on Birthright during Winter Break.  There will be information on the Winter Birthright trips as well as opportunities for returning to Israel this winter and next summer.
 
Wednesday, September 5 is the first day of registration for the Winter Birthright trips.  And, our special guest for the Israeli dinner will be Adam Stewart, North American Director of Shorashim, our Birthright provider.  He will have the answer to many of your questions.
 
For those who went on Birthright this summer, please come prepared to share some stories from your trip.
 
 
 
Thursday, September 6 - 4-7 PM - Hartigan Beach (where Albion meets the Lake) - Hillel Beach Party
 
Hillel holds its annual Beach Party on Loyola's beautiful area beach/park..  The beach volleyball is returning.  But the new addition is a BBQ.  We are bringing out the grills and some great kosher hot dogs, hamburgers, and marinated chicken tenders!
