Hillel This Week
Shalom,
First, we would like to welcome those who have joined the Hillel listserve this week - Welcome to Loyola!
This listserve message publicizes our two special programs this week: The Wednesday Israeli "Birthright" Dinner for those who have been to Israel and would like to return, and for those who want to go on Birthright. Wednesday is the first day of Registration for winter trips. We will be sending a special listserve message just about Birthright Registration. There is also information below about Thursday's annual Hillel Beach Party.
After the details about these programs, there are some Hillel notices - some job postings and announcements about a special Israel conference in Nashville for aspiring writers and journalists as well as a great TV Concert from Masada on Thursday night on PBS/WTTW at 8 PM.
We are also going to send a special listserve message later this week about free High Holiday services in the area. Hillel does not conduct services on campus. We will have a Rosh HaShanah Dinner on Wednesday night, September 12 at 5 PM, leaving students time to get to services. We will also have our annual Apples and Honey Tables in the Student Union Lobby this Monday, September 10, where all the information about High Holiday services will be available - in addition to apples, honey and chocolate and caramel fondue!
Wednesday, September 5 - 5 PM - Hillel-Mundelein 2nd Floor - "BACK FROM BIRTHRIGHT - NOW WHAT?" Israeli dinner
With great Israeli food, this is an opportunity for students who were in Israel on Birthright or other programs to meet each other as well as students interested in going on Birthright during Winter Break or next summer. There will be information on
the next Birthright trips as well as opportunities for returning to Israel this winter and next summer for those who have already been to Israel.
Wednesday, September 5 is the first day of registration for the Winter Birthright trips, so it is a perfect time for our Israeli dinner. About 5:30 PM we will have some students who were in Israel this summer share their highlights. Our special guest will be ADAM STEWART, the North American Director of Shorashim, our Birthright provider, (as well as the beloved Judaism teacher at Loyola, who had to leave us because of his Birthright responsibilities). Adam will have the answers to your questions about upcoming Birthright trips as well as programs that let you return to Israel.
Thursday, September 6 - 4-7 PM - Hartigan Beach/Park (where Albion meets the Lake) - HILLEL'S ANNUAL BEACH PARTY!
Hillel holds its annual Beach Party on the beautiful little beach/park right next to campus. We set up a volleyball net on the sand, and this year we are trying something new - a BBQ. We are bringing out the grills and kosher hot dogs, hamburgers, and marinated chicken tenders! We will also have some Hillel giveaways! We are praying that the weather holds out, and we hope you will join us! Albion Avenue is the street just north of Loyola Ave. You can get to the beach by taking the alley behind the Wellness Center.
PLEASE REMEMBER HILLEL HAS:

"DO THE 'WRITE' THING" CONFERENCE FOR WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS
November 11-13, 2007 - Nashville, Tennessee
This is an annual conference sponsored by Hagshama, the organization that helps campuses with Israel information, advocacy and programming. The conference timing and location always coincides with the yearly meeting of the General Assembly of the United Jewish Communities (the "mega" meeting of the year for the American Jewish community).
Here is the information that Hagshama sent us about the conference. Students who have attended "Do the 'Write' Thing" have said it has been an amazing experience. You should note, however, that you will be missing 2 days of classes. Hillel would be able to provide some additional subsidy for this conference.
DO THE "WRITE" THING
"Do the 'Write' Thing" is an incredible opportunity to hone your writing skills, meet and network with journalists form all over the country and abroad, explore issues of Israel and the media, and experience Nashville, Tennessee!
Only $99 covers the cost of the Conference, and flight reminbursements are available.

DAVID BROZA CONCERT FROM MASADA - Thursday, September 6 - 8 PM - Channel 11 - WTTW/PBS
This one-hour PBS television event highlights one of Israel's most famous singer/songwriters, who will be joined by Grammy Award winners Jackson Browne and Shawn Colvin. There is spectacular aeriel footage of Israel. High-definition equipment was flown in from all over the world for this production, and they erected state-of-the art master control studios on top and at the base of Masada. Those who have been there can imagine what that must have been like!
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Area synagogues and temples are looking for teachers for Hebrew and Sunday school classes. They will train their teachers, so you do not need teaching experience. If you are at all interested in this kind of work on Sundays and sometimes during the week, please speak with Patti Ray, Hillel Director, pray@luc.edu.
Tein Li Chow, the Chinese Kosher take-out located in the Jewel on Howard Street, is looking for counter help weekdays from 3-9 PM. Salary is about $8/hour. If interested, contact Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.
