arts, music and cultural events.

and the week with a new take on Havdalah at Beat Kitchen in Roscoe
Vilage.

**KFAR Jewish Arts Center http://www.kfarcenter.org Presents **

**Hebrock Havdalah!**

Featuring the band, Even Sh'siyah, and Matthue Roth

**Evn Sh'siyah** According to Kabbalistic tradition was the original
element of Creation from which the entire world came into existence.
The band layers original lyrics and ancient Hebrew texts over folk
rock grooves with an eclectic blend of Mid-Eastern spice, Southern
jam rock sweetness and jam band solos. Plus...

**Matthue Roth** (as seen on HBO's Def Poetry Slam)  Juggling
adrenaline and humor like a kid playing with a loaded gun, Matthue
riffs on his experience as an Orthodox Jew, mixing in meditations on
sexuality, gender roles, and the conflict between vegetarianism and
his grandmother's cooking. Matthue throws hip-hop, slam poetry, and
storytelling together in an on-stage riot that's reverent and
irreverent at the same time.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 at WEBSTER PLACE 11

6:30 PM - LIVE AND BECOME (150 minutes)

In 1984, thousands of Africans from 26 countries hit by famine amass in
refugee camps in Sudan.  Israel and the US undertake a huge rescue
operation (Operation Moses) to transport thousands of Ethopian Jewis to
Israel.  Shlomo, a 9 year-old Christian boy in the refugee camp is forced
by his mother to pretend he is Jewish and orphaned to save him from famine
and death.  As he leaves she delcares, "live and become."  Arriving in
Israel, he has the good fortune of being placed with a happy and loving
French Sephardic family who lives in Tel-Aviv.  Shlomo grows up fearing
that his double life and secret will be revealed.

9:30 PM - JOY (90 minutes)

Joy is a hearbreakingly unforgettable character with a dysfunctional
family.  Her mom nags her to lose weight and find a husband.  Her uptight
brother loses his job, but pretends to go to work each day to keep his
marriage together.  Joy is in a dead-end job with a boss who exploits her.
Joy's life changes when she auditions for a TV reality show and is chosen
to throw a surprise party for her family on the show.  The theme of the
show is forgiveness. Now Joy has to let viewers into her private inner
world.

A masterful work from a director who has the uncanny ability to encompass
the endearing and the bleak.  Best Actress, Sigalit Fuchs, Jerusalem
International Film Festival.

Call Alana if you want to go with other students.  She will try to arrange
rides.  Following is the public transportation information:

Take the Red Line to Fullerton.  Then catch the #74 Westbound bus until
Fullerton and Clybourn.  Its about a 7 minute ride on the bus...so if you
are feeling daring you can walk.  Walk on Clybourn until you hit Webster
and take a right and look for the theater at 1471 W. Webster.
The whole trip should take you about 30- 40 minutes.
