Hillel Next Week

Shalom,

This Hillel listserve email includes an announcement about our special
program on Monday, the last in our "real Israel" lecture series; a request
to please help serve food on Tuesday at Chicago's only kosher soup
kitchen, The Uptown Cafe; the Hillel Latin Dance class on Wednesday; the
details about next Saturday night's citywide Hillel band concert/dance party
at the UIC Student Union featuring Israel's hottest musician, Ivri Lider;
and a few job opportunities that have been sent to Hillel.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 30 - NOON - HUSSEY LOUNGE/DAMEN HALL-10TH FLOOR - ISRAELI
LUNCH WILL BE SERVVED

"CONSTRUCTING RELATIONS: An in-depth look at the relationship between
Israel and the Middle East and how it impacts the global community"

A lecture by Professor Jonathan Adelman, University of Denver, Graduate
School of International Studies

Dr. Adelman was the doctoral dissertation advisor to Condoleezza Rice, has
been a speaker for our State Department, and has appeared nationally as a
commentator on Mideast affairs both on television and on the radio.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31 - MEET AT 5:00 PM AT HILLEL - PLEASE HELP SERVE AT THE
"UPTOWN CAFE" - 909 W. WILSON (WE NEED TO BE THERE AT 5:30 PM)

The "Uptown Cafe" located in Uptown is Chicago's only kosher soup kitchen.
It serves food in a very special way.  Each of the volunteers are waiters
and waitresses in a cafe setting, where those coming to eat are treated as
restaurant guests.  The only thing they do not get is a check at the end
of the meal.

The volunteers each get aprons, notepads and menu options.  In the world
outside the Cafe, most of these patrons have few choices.  In the Cafe
they are guests who can order from the menu offerings.

The "Uptown Cafe" is a project of the Jewish community's Project Ezra
(from the Hebrew word "help") but the guests who come to eat are not all
Jewish and reflect the diversity of the poverty in Uptown.  This is a very
special experience.  The Cafe needs Hillel's assistance, because it is
Halloween and they are short of volunteers.

If you can help on Tuesday, you can come to Hillel to get a ride at 5 PM
or you can drive yourself and meet at the Cafe at 5:30 PM.

If you can volunteer at the Uptown Cafe on Tuesday, sign up in Hillel or
email Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1 - 2-3 PM - MCCORMICK LOUNGE, COFFEY HALL

"LATIN DANCING AT LOYOLA!"

It's a Loyola story - a Russian Jewish Competitive Dance National Finalist
teaching Latin dancing at a Jesuit school!

By the request of his students from last semester, Konstantin Garibashvili
will again offer his Latin Dance Class.  No preparation necessary.  Just
come ready to dance!

SATURDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 4 - "IVRI LIDER LIVE CONCERT/DANCE PARY  - UP
CLOSE AND PERSONAL" - MIDWEST HILLEL EVENT - TICKETS ONLY $10

DOORS OPEN - 8 PM, CONCERT STARTS - 9 PM - UIC STUDENT CENTER EAST -

Israel's hottest rock musician today!  This is his US Midwest appearance.
Hillel's in the Midwest are sending buses to the concert.  Lider has
composed the music of two of Israel's recent award-winning films "Walk on
Water" and "Yossi and Jagger" and the new film "Bubble."

After the concert/dance party, there will be an informal reception with
Lider.

It is likely this concert will sell out, so if you want to go - get your
ticket now.  You can print it right from the computer.

If you want to go with other students from Loyola - Alana Kinarsky,
Hillel's Israel Intern, will meet students in the CFSU Lobby on Saturday
