Welcome Back From Spring Break!

Shalom,

We hope you had an enjoyable Spring Break. Hillel has planned some special programs for this coming week. Please note that they include the last Shabbat Dinner of the semester and the last opportunity of the semester to volunteer with our Hillel at the Uptown Cafe. And Monday's Jewelry Making program has been requested for the past two years, and it is finally returning! Rabbi Drutman is doing a Torah study class on Monday as well, and, in what has become a weekly event, the Latin Dance class is meeting Wednesdaly at 4 PM.

MONDAY, MARCH 12 - 12:30-1:30 PM - "LUNCH 'N LEARN" WITH RABBI DRUTMAN - HILLEL, 201 MUNDELEIN CENTER

Rabbi Zev Drutman will look forward two weeks to Passover and discuss some of the themes and practices of the holiday. We will have a pizza lunch! Just a reminder - Hillel will host a Passover First Seder on Monday evening, April 2 at 6:30 PM in the Mundelein Student Lounge.

MONDAY, MARCH 12 - 3:30-5:00 PM - "PUT THE 'JEW' BACK IN JEWELRY MAKING!"

In the New Fine Arts Building Jewelry Lab - 1131 W. Sheridan Road - Room #205

Pam Robinson, instructor in Fine Arts who has her own jewelry studio on Lill Street, teaches Loyola's Jewelry Making Class (one of the hardest classes in the university to get into!). She has invited us to the new Jewelry Lab to make some gifts for ourselves or others. She is providing all the materials and the instructions! All you need is to be there for this great opportunity to be creative!

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 - "LATIN DANCE CLASS" - 4-5 PM - COFFEY HALL, MCCORMICK LOUNGE

Konstantin Garibashvili and Jane Shmelkov continue to offer free lessons teaching the basics of Latin social dancing. One class is not dependent on the other - so if you have not attended prerviously - not a problem! Konstantin and Jane are both National Competitive Dance Finalists and would love to have you come to the class.

THURSDAY, MARCH 15 - VOLUNTEER AT THE "UPTOWN CAFE" - MEET AT HILLEL AT 5 PM

THE "UPTOWN CAFE" IS LOCATED AT 909 W. WILSON, CHICAGO, IL 60640

The "Uptown Cafe" located in Uptown is Chicago's only kosher soup kitchen. It serves food in a very caring way. Each of the volunteers are waiters and waitresses in a cafe setting, where those coming to eat are treated as restaurant guests. The only thing they do not get is a check at the end of the meal.

The volunteers get aprons, notepads and menu options. In the world outside the Cafe, most of these patrons have few choices. In the Cafe, they are guests who can order from the menu offerings.

The "Uptown Cafe" is a project of the Jewish community's Project Ezra (from the Hebrew word "help"), but the guests who come to eat are not all Jewish and reflect the diversity of the poverty in Uptown. Volunteering at the Cafe is a very special experience.

We need to be at the Cafe at 5:30 PM. You can get there yourself or you can get a ride from campus by meeting at Hillel at 5 PM. If you can help on Thursday, please sign up in the Hillel office or email Patti Ray at pray @luc.edu. We need 10 volunteers for the evening.

FRIDAY EVENING, MARCH 17 - "ISRAEL SHABBAT DINNER" - 6 PM - CARDINAL'S SUITE, MUNDELEIN CENTER-1ST FLOOR

This is the final Shabbat dinner Hillel will host this school year - so all of you who have wanted to attend a Shabbat dinner and have not been able to do so - this is the one you should come to! It is also fitting at this time to thank Carrie Rosen, Hillel's Vice-President, who is graduating this semester, for all of her efforts these past years to make sure Hillel is able to offer Shabbat dinners to the Loyola community.

Our final Shabbat dinner has an Israeli theme, which will include delicious Israeli food. Our special guests will be Adam Stewart and his family - his wife, Micaela and their two young sons. Adam is the beloved teacher of the Judaism classes at Loyola and is also the Assistant National Director of Shorashim, the organization that coordinates our Birthright trips.

As usual, our Shabbat dinner is free. We want to give special thanks for our Israel Shabbat Dinner to the JCRC/Hillel Israel Initiative on Illinois Campuses. If you will be joining us, please sign up in Hillel or email Patti Ray at pray@luc.edu.

WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR FIRST WEEK BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER SPRING BREAK!
