A Place at the Table
Recently, at a Jewish student leadership conference I sat in on a session entitled: "Discrimination Double Standard - LGBT Americans and the Law."  In the conference program, it was written that the students would learn "what you can do to be part of civil rights history."  Despite being very late in an already exhausting day, the room was filled to capacity with fully engaged students.  The professional LGBT advocates held the students' rapt attention as they explained legalese.  To me it was apparent: the Jewish students care about this community because the LGBT students are their friends.

On campus, Hillel professionals are helping Jewish LGBT students create supportive and celebratory communities. For many of these students just knowing that there is a place for them at the Jewish table makes all the difference.

When thinking about Shavuot, many different things come to mind. Late night Jewish learning. Cheesecake. Confirmation ceremonies. Blintzes. But how many of us also associate Shavuot with gleaning of fields?
