TO THE HILLEL BOARD

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well.  Frank and Dennis are in Israel as of this
writing, and at the end of my note - I am copying the message Dennis sent
before Shabbat.

I will send out a list-serve e-mail tomorrow letting everyone know about
the food we are having this week at Hillel.

Each of you should make sure and be around consistently Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday.  If you have not printed out your new schedule, please do so
and put it on the desk.  Look for any new Jewish students and be prepared
to have a lot of students visiting Hillel.  This always happens at the
beginning of the semester.

Please put on your personal calendars the two big programs we have
scheduled for the second week of school.

Tuesday, January 24 the Vice-Counsel of the Israel Embassy, Andy David, is
coming to speak about "Israel: What the Media Doesn't Tell You."  This is
a major Israel program for us, the first time a Consulate representative
has spoken at Loyola in many years.  Kevin, Anna and Ilya Zharov heard
Andy David at the Israel Advocacy Conference and felt he would be great at
Loyola.  We are sending notice of this throughout campus.

The program is at 4:30 PM in the Hayes Room with an Israeli dinner at 4
PM.

You should know that starting the following week, Kevin and Alex Resnikov
have taken the responsibility to lead informal discussions about Israel
and current events Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

Thursday, January 26 is our first "Wanna" of the semester.  "Wanna Hold
'Em?" will take place starting at 6 PM in the room downstairs by the
elevator - officially called the Mundelein Student Lounge.  This will be
an evening of Texas Hold 'Em, Doorak, board games, etc.  There will be a
$5/person charge for the poker, with the money going to the JUF Campaign,
and there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

OK - that's enough for now.  I hope you had a good break.  Last Sunday,
Allen and I were in Memphis for a wedding and, as some of you know, before
the wedding about 100 of us were at Graceland - and it was Elvis'
birthday!  I was a child of the 60's - and had a great time there.

Here is Dennis lovely note:

Subject: Dennis from Israel

Hey Everyone,

I'm writing from Israel!  I just wanted to let you
know that I'm doing well here and that I really miss
everybody.  I've visited dozens of amazing places. I
scuba dived in the red sea, ate tasty meat baguettes
in Jaffa, and floated effortlessly over the dead sea.
I miss all of you terribly!  I just hope to see
everyone soon.  I love you guys and I wish you all a
happy shabbat!

Sincerely,
Dennis J Parad

[Hillel-at-Loyola] Ariel Sharon

Shalom,

As we enter this Shabbat, Israel's Prime Minister is gravely ill in
Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.  We are forwarding to our listserve this
message from Avrum Infeld, Hillel's International Director.

He is currently in Israel with the Birthright Israel trips, and many of
the Loyola students who are doing Birthright trips over winter break are
either in Israel now or are arriving this week during this very difficult
time for the Jewish people.

FROM AVRUM INFELD

"Let us join with our brothers and sisters in Israel, and with people
of good faith around the world, in praying for the recovery of Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. May the strength and courage that have
been his mainstays throughout his life once again sustain him in this
hour of need."

Shabbat Shalom.

[Hillel-at-Loyola] Hillel Social Justice Mini-Tour

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4 - NOON-3:30 PM - HILLEL SOCIAL JUSTICE MINI-TOUR

Join Hillel Director, Patti Ray, and Brett Cohen, Loyola Jewish United Fund
Committee Member, and students from Chicago area universities on a special
afternoon tour of 3 remarkable area organizations that are funded by the JUF.
We will travel by bus and begin at and return to the Response Center located in
Skokie at 9304 Skokie Boulevard in the strip mall where Bagel Country is.  The
mall is at the intersection of Skokie Boulevard and Gross Point Road, and the
Response Center is above Edwardo's Pizza.  You will be able to park your car in
the lot there.

To show how important these services are, the tour is on a weekday, so you
can see these facilities in action.  We thought winter break would be a
good time, because we have a lot less on our plates.  It is also an
opportunity to demonstrate that Loyola students care about social
justice and can work that concern into our vacation schedules.

We will begin with lunch at the Response Center, located in Skokie, which
offers counseling, education, outreach, prevention and medical services to
teens and their families.  Next we will travel to The Ark, located in
Rogers Park, which, as its name implies, is an oasis of help to care for
the physical, emotional, social and spirtual well-being of Chicago's
Jewish needy.  Finally, we will visit the Pregnant and Parenting Group Home in
Rogers Park.  This is a project of the Jewish Children's Bureau, which provides
housing, care and education for pregnant teen mothers and their newborns.

This special tour has been arranged in order to put a "human face" to some of
the important social justice organizations of the Jewish community.  We hope
you will take an afternoon out of your winter vacation to join us in learning
about these organizations and showing them that we care about the valuable work
they do.

Please e-mail Brett Cohen at bcohen4@luc.edu if you can join us.  Also, let him
know if you need transportation to and from the Response Center.
