Hillel 5768

Before we go to "next year," there are a few "this year" announcements:

WEDNESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 12 - 5 PM - CARDINAL'S SUITE - ROSH HASHANAH DINNER

A traditional kosher New Year's meal from the matzo ball soup to the noodle kugel to the apple pie.  It is totally free.  Please join us.  Students will be leaving for services after dinner at Emanuel Congregation and Northwestern, for those who would like to go.

THURSDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 13 - 6 PM - MUNDELEIN STUDENT LOUNGE-1ST FLOOR - SHOFAR BLOWING

This is a "Hillel first!"  Dr. Israel Sandman, one of the new Theology Department instructors of the Judaism course, is coming to Mundelein Center particularly to blow the traditional shofar notes for Loyola students and faculty and staff.   It is a real "mitzvah" to hear the shofar blown on Rosh HaShanah, and it is wonderful to have this opportunity right on campus.

Dr. Sandman will blow the shofar and explain the tradition of shofar blowing.  After he blows the shofar, he is walking to the lakefront for the traditional ceremony of "tashlich" - the ceremony of symbolically casting one's sins into the sea as you begin the New Year.  He would be glad to have anyone join him in tashlich as well.

NEXT WEEK AT HILLEL

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 - MITZVAH OF THE MONTH - MEZZUZAH MAKING!

Hillel's Judaica Committee is trying something new this year - every month Hillel will have some hands-on program related to a mitzvah.  The first one is about mezzuzah.

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM - HILLEL - 201 MUNDELEIN CENTER - Rabbi Zev Drutman will discuss the laws of mezzuzah and how a mezzuzah is made.

4:00-6:00 PM - Hallway outside of Hillel - Danny Goldman, Hillel/Loyola alum, will reprise his famous mezzuzah making class of several years ago.  We have the fimo clay, all you need to do is come with your creativity.  For those who will put up their mezzuzahs, mezzuzah "clafs" (the parchment that makes a mezzuzah a mezzuzah) are being donated to Hillel.  We will also have directions on how to put up your mezzuzah.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBERr 18 - LIFE SCIENCES AUDITORIUM-142 QUINLAN - 4:00 PM

THE JEWISH VOICE IN LATIN CINEMA - "LOS GAUCHOS JUDIOS" (THE JEWISH COWBOYS)

In celebration of Latino Heritage Month, Hillel is sponsoring two Latin films with a Jewish theme.  The first, "Los Gauchos Judios," is a drama/comedy/musical telling of the story of the Jewish "cowboys" - the settlement of the first Jews to South America.  Subtitles are in English.  Marcela Brusa, Hillel Faculty Board Member and Instructor in Spanish, will introduce the film.  There will be a kosher taco bar for refreshments!

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 - 10 AM-2 PM - DAMEN HALL LOBBY - FIRST HILLEL BAGEL SALE!
