Important Shofar Blowing on Thursday

THURSDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 13 - 6 PM - MUNDELEIN STUDENT LOUNGE-1ST FLOOR - SHOFAR BLOWING

This is a "Hillel first!"  Dr. Israel Sandman, one of the new Theology Department instructors of the Judaism course, is coming to Mundelein Center particularly to blow the traditional shofar notes for Loyola students and faculty and staff.   It is a real "mitzvah" to hear the shofar blown on Rosh HaShanah, and it is wonderful to have this opportunity right on campus.

Dr. Sandman will blow the shofar and explain the tradition of shofar blowing.  After he blows the shofar, he is walking to the lakefront for the traditional ceremony of "tashlich" - the ceremony of symbolically casting one's sins into the sea as you begin the New Year.  He would be glad to have anyone join him in tashlich as well.

Dr. Sandman is walking here all the way from Rogers Park wheeling his little son to do this mitzvah.  Don't worry, I did not ask him to do this.  He very much wants to do this on his own.  I am writing to ask any of you who will be on campus and can be there - to please be there to hear him blow shofar.  As I said in the listserve message, this is a mitzvah.  But besides that - this very nice man is walking all the way here to do this for our community - and I would hate to have there be only a very few people there.

Once agian,  Happy, Happy New Year!  I think we have really had a great beginning to the year!

Patti
